When New York shoe and fashion designer Jennifer Jaffe moved to Boynton Beach with her husband five years ago, she could hardly imagine that a burgeoning family would lead to her next career choice.
Three months ago the mother of three (ages two, five and eight) opened up the “up-cycle” fashion boutique and design studio Juxtapoze in downtown West Palm Beach at 123 Datura Street.
“My middle child is extremely picky about what he chooses to wear,” Jaffe, who also owned shoe store, said. “Now I was in children’s wear manufacturing and here I was fighting every day to just get clothes on him. So I went to Goodwill and got some vintage T-shirts and started making shorts for him because I couldn’t find any good fabric that was semi-cool for a boy. And you can forget any fabrics for a girl, they are all terrible. Anyway, everywhere we went people were stopping us and asking where did we get the, So I started doing my own stuff.”
And now she has expanded the idea of re-purposing existing fabrics into a 3,000 square foot space where “interactive retail” and “eco-friendly clothing” are the fashion philosophies of the day. In addition to a self-branded label (along with custom handbags and up-and-coming designer pieces), customers can also choose to design their own looks and work with Juxtapoze’s patternmaker and seamstress.
“It’s a do-it-yourself fashion studio where the customer is part of the process,” explained Jaffe.
Designer wannabes can then choose to tye-dye or accessorize with jewelry made from the “bead bar.” And yes, you can bring in your own T-shirt, necktie, blankets, etc. to be transformed.
